About Me

I've always been a very observant person.  Since I was very small I would notice things adults around me couldn't see.  From an early age, a natural desire to express these observations took hold of me and I became completely obsessed with drawing. I would sit in my room at my little desk and draw for hours.  Just pencil and paper. I felt so tuned into the details and rhythym of life.  I eventually became so good at drawing whatever was in my mind, that I could draw anything I wanted just from my memory.  Unfortunately, I didn't have parents or a support system that recognized my talent or my desire.  A subsequent parental divorce and the responsibilities that fell on me to care for my younger siblings halted my artistic endeavours.  But the fire that burned within me to create never died.

I was born in Los Angeles.  In the 80's nearly all film and television production emanated in Hollywood.  It was easy to get hired on productions at that time as very few people wanted to work in the industry.  So in my early twenties I got a job working on a television project.  I thought that industry would be the outlet for my creative energy; that I would become a director or a screenwriter.  That did not happen and instead I became a Production Supervisor and Manager. I worked on several feature films over the years.  I owned a house in Venice, CA.  I traveled to many places and made a very nice amount of money.  But I wasn't personally satisfied.

I'm a very visual thinker, which means that when I think thoughts, those thoughts become pictures or videos in my mind and I can look at all aspects of that thought from a three-dimensional perspective.  Around 2006 I was working on a film and I suddenly had a mental image of a completed painting.  I had never thought of creating paintings before and this was very shocking. The image continued to persist in my mind until I became compelled to figure out how to make the thought/vision a reality. This took me some time to find the proper materials and figure out a process.  I wasn't interested in painting on canvas or with any traditional materials, so I started making my own panels and worked with what I was familiar with.  I've always been good with my hands and I know a certain amount about refurbishing houses, so I naturally gravitated to more industrial materials.  Over time, this process has become honed and refined and I now use a combination of latex (house paint), oil paints, cold wax medium, and encaustic (a hot wax process).  I still make my own panels, which is a very satisfying aspect of my art making process.  I also have a company called Daneridge Wax which manufactures and sells cold wax medium.

I've called Austin, Texas home since 2004.  I stopped working in the film industry in 2012 and have tailored my life so that my art is my priority, not having a job to make money so that in what little spare time I have I can paint.  I sold my house, downsized my lifestyle, and made the financial room so that I can finally be the creative person I've always wanted to be; the creative person I was always meant to be.  I am deliberately living my life the way that I choose and that is a freedom I am so grateful for.
